Sigh, reading Stone Butch Blues so far has made me shed a lot of tears. I’m in awe of how far (and little) I am removed from that amount of violence and personal pain. Knowing that these issues still plague butches (and femmes) today makes me want to hold them tighter and love them harder.
I want to be a fierce femme for them.
Reading the forums on b-f.com tonight, I came across a thread talking about butches being “out of style” with the new generation embracing “genderqueer” instead. (Really the discussion then veered towards the argument that butch IS genderqueer…blah, etc.) Hmm… looking back at the stigma of “invert” attached to butches, the violence from society, the misunderstandings held by some schools of feminism and non political straight folks, the disdain held from them by middle and upper class androgynous and feminine lesbians back when butch-femme meant working (aka low) class, the picture isn’t a benevolent one. I imagine being (a) butch in 2008 is easier than being one in 1958, but still full of challenges. I really want to appreciate them fully. Just as I hope they appreciate femmes fully.
The world doesn’t appreciate this dance, dynamic, yin-yang, between two women. Really. It is seen as a poor imitation of heterosexuals. Nothing of course could be further from the truth. But then I think, KNOW, that the world does not want to even TRY to appreciate or acknowledge “lesbians who want to be men” …and the “perverted straight girls who like them.” If only they knew…

And now for a portrayal that was actually pretty popular last year, that helped awaken me to my :ahem: queer desires :cough: (This and reality TV shows combined, I swear MTV made me gay.)

Ciara – Like a Boi Boy
My fav part? see: seconds 0:21 & 0:22 :cough: tha crotch grab did me in; which is funny since when boys did it I thought it looked stupid.
