Equally outrageous, funny and touching, Jenny Livingston’s acclaimed documentary looks at a very vocal segment of the gay community: the drag “houses” of Harlem that compete in elaborate fashion shows known as “balls,” with contestants dressed as Vogue models, socialites, military men and other sartorial stereotypes. These inner-city groups serve as surrogate families to the gay minority youths who join them.
So earlier this week I saw Paris is Burning. Can I just say that I understand why this is one of the most watched documentaries ever? I actually ended up watching it back to back, the second time with director’s commentary with Willi Ninja. Nothing I can say would do it justice. There were so many great quotes, I can’t remember them all. This documentary shot in the late 80s gives real history on the house ball scene.
You can check out the movie on Netflix or Youtube.
*Oh, might I add I LOVE Octavia Saint Laurent! She was just great in this.

PIB is in my dvd collection. It’s a great film. There is a (sort of) sequel to Paris is Burning called ‘How Do I Look’. It’s not as good as PIB but its interesting and it gives updates on many of the people in PIB.
