Arguing having debates on the internet can be frustrating (but an ego boost when you know you’re right ;) ). I’ve had my share of debates. I mean I can’t let it go. Especially if I feel what somebody is thinking or saying isn’t right, lol. Unfortunately I’ve found that the medium of the internet isn’t always the best place to have debates as people end up arguing over semantics and not really getting to the point (I too am guilty). I’ve seen entire threads/posts where someone goes back and forth for 40 comments because they failed to realize the original post was being sarcastic. In fact I’m of the mind that most arguments online and in the real world occur because people miscommunicate.

L,

You know I used to argue a lot online but of late I haven’t really had the interest to do it too much. I suppose it’s enough to know I’m right or that I get the point. Lol And also I realized that most people don’t really understand how to debate and that part of debating is also to concede points every now and then.

Now I just say my piece and move on.

I took a break from debating on a political Internet forum (2003-2009) to start my blog. The forum I came from was unique in that I was the only black woman and the only lesbian in a sea of mostly straight white conservative and liberal males. The experience I took from it was one of knowledge and growth because in almost every debate I learned something new whether it was about myself or the topic being discussed, I always made sure to take something positive away from it. If the debate seemed futile, I would end it.

The beauty in debating is in the rules, which most debaters aren’t aware of, but it’s simple: etiquette. This shouldn’t be very hard to adhere to and shouldn’t be very hard to abide by if you’re respectful of opinions even if you don’t agree with them. In any case, I love a good debate. It can prepare you for a number of career professions. I’ve learned some hard lessons along the way, like determining when to stop, accepting when I’m wrong, and having the courage to move on with no hard feelings after the debate is over.

@ Monie Yea, ppl don’t know how to debate and get all riled up…that’s when they start typing in all caps, lol.

@Knowledge I know what you mean. I come from debating on predominately white feminist blogs and ppl twice my age for the past few years. I’m done w/ it now, but I did learn a lot.

I love to play the Devil’s Advocate, but I have learned that that tactic isn’t always appreciated …

I’ve also learned that I’m not always capable of taking a dose of my own medicine! *lol*

Yeah … I can admit it …

P.S. Thanks so much for the well wishes regarding me and my partner’s upcoming wedding! I am so excited! :D

You’re so right. Miscommunication is a series problem. It always amazes me how much people don’t comprehend because they’re not paying attention. Another thing with the web though, is that people get extra bold and so they’ll argue just because they can…without getting slapped for being an a$$.

Sometime I really want to but I know no matter what I say it’s like talking to air…

I was talking on a forum about Twilight and how I thought is wasn’t so hot.The fan girls leaped on me screaming how I’m just mad cause I’m ugly and no man would want me….*shakes head*

I use to debate w/ folks on the net but, I don’t anymore. I don’t have the time or energy. I’m just really not a argumentative person anyway…
