The forum I came from was unique in that I was the only black woman and the only lesbian in a sea of mostly straight white conservative and liberal males. The experience I took from it was one of knowledge and growth because in almost every debate I learned something new whether it was about myself or the topic being discussed, I always made sure to take something positive away from it. If the debate seemed futile, I would end it. The beauty in debating is in the rules, which most debaters aren't aware of, but it's simple: etiquette. This shouldn't be very hard to adhere to and shouldn't be very hard to abide by if you're respectful of opinions even if you don't agree with them. In any case, I love a good debate. It can prepare you for a number of career professions. I've learned some hard lessons along the way, like determining when to stop, accepting when I'm wrong, and having the courage to move on with no hard feelings after the debate is over.
